Batt insulation can be used in nearly any type of insulation application. Batt insulation can be used to insulate floors, walls, ceilings, and attics. While it can be used anywhere, oftentimes other insulation types such as blown-in insulation or spray foam insulation may be better options.
Batt Insulation has numerous advantages. Because professionals can install the product relatively quickly, it is one of the least expensive ways to insulate your home. When compared to other types of insulation, the fiberglass version generally has the lowest installed price.
Is blown-in cellulose insulation good?
At 3.5 per inch of material, the R-value of blown-in cellulose is 23% better per inch than fiberglass batts! According to research done at the Oak Ridge National Lab, fiberglass loses up to 50% of its R-value in very cold conditions; making cellulose a better choice for homes in northern climates.
What are the benefits of spray foam insulation?
An alternative to traditional cellulose and fiberglass insulation, spray foam insulation resists heat transfer and insulates and seals gaps. SPF creates a tight barrier and prevents hot and cold air, vapor and moisture from penetrating into a building's interior. It can also be an effective a sound barrier.
By air sealing in your attic, you can stop many major air leaks and help to maintain the desired temperature throughout your home. Combined with attic insulation, air sealing can help to alleviate the formation of dangerous ice dams in the winter.
What is the purpose of a vapor barrier on insulation?
Vapor barriers applied over the face of the insulation or over the foundation systems of basements, to provide additional benefits in the fight against moisture. Usually composed of a thin film, such as polyethylene, vapor barriers are used to retard or prevent water vapor diffusion into a wall, ceiling or floor during the cold winter.
